Kisumu RFC confident of Kenya Cup survival

Kisumu RFC head coach Brian Makalama is confident his charges will fight to the last match of the season to maintain their Kenya Cup status.

The lake-side outfit is at the bottom of the league with five points after 12 rounds of play, eight points behind 11th placed Western Bulls with seven games left, and he maintains the poor show notwithstanding they’ll fight to the last man.

“We need to take each match at a time and take lessons because my charges always want to win and perform well so as to maintain the Kenya Cup status,” Makalama told Citizen Digital.

“We’re not out yet, we are at the bottom of the league but not yet out, we are fighting to win matches and we believe we’ll retain our status in the Kenya cup,” explained the former Western Bulls tactician.

Despite his side being whitewashed 59-13 by table-toppers Kabras Sugar over the weekend, he maintains his charges have improved a great deal since they were demolished 89-00 by the same side in the league opener.

Makalama who has also coached Rimula Rhinos of Uganda has at the same time hailed his charges for their  ‘improvement’.

“The first match we played against Kabras we were demolished 89-00, so for me scoring points against them is a great improvement,” stated Makalama. “The score doesn’t give the correct account of the game but the boys have really improved in terms of the competition and I believe we’re on the right path,” he added.

Western-based Kabras Sugar after match round 12 tops the league with 55 points, a point ahead of KCB RFC while Menengai Cream Homeboyz comes in third with 49 points.

Resolution Impala Saracens are fourthwith 40 points, seven points ahead of fifth-placed Top Fry Nakuru with Menengai Oilers sitting sixth with 31 points.

Stanbic Mwamba is at position seven with 29 points, eight points ahead of Nondescript while Kenya Harlequins hold position nine with 17 points.

Varsity side Blak Blad is tenth with 14 points, a point ahead of Western Bulls.
