Kisumu Day reach hockey finals at Nyanza Games

Kisumu Day will hope to crown their unblemished record with a victory in the boys’ hockey final when they come up against bitter rivals Homa Bay High School on Wednesday.

They made the most of their imposing first day exploits to secure a place in this year’s finals of the Nyanza region games being held at Homa Bay Boys.

The team followed their opening day 1-0 victory over pre-tournament favorites Agoro Sare with a 1-0 win over St Mary’s Yala to make the cut for the semifinals.

In the semifinals, the Booker Odhiambo-led side left it late to hit home the winner to secure a berth in the final yet unblemished.

Team Coach Odhiambo Booker heaped praise on his players for doing the Italian job.

“The boys played very well even though we missed several scoring opportunities but I hope we’ll play better in the finals.”

The coach blamed injuries to some of his midfield players are the reason for occasional lackluster performances.

“We had a loophole in the midfield and I feel that is why we played so poorly there.”

The seasoned coach has set his sight on clinching the finals and also going all the way in the national competitions

“We are planning to win this trophy and also the national championships. That is achievable since we are playing better than last year.” He reaffirmed.

In the finals, they will come up against this year’s hosts Homa Bay who convincingly overcame Agoro Sare 2-0 in the other semifinal.

In the girls, final Nyamira Girls will battle it out with Ambassador Pamela Mboya for the regional crown.

However, despite drubbing Dede 5-0, Sinyolo Girls were bundled out of this year’s competitions after there were found culpable of fielding an ineligible player. After a brief examination of her documents, the student from Kerugoya was found to be a repeater and shouldn’t have participated in any capacity in the games.
