Kisumu basketball clubs struggling to find training courts

Basketball teams based in Kisumu are struggling to find match venues following the closure of Kisumu Sports Ground last year in March for renovations.

The renovation works were expected to take six months but the facility is yet to be reopened, leaving Kenya Basketball Federation clubs including Lakeside men and Kisumu LadyBucks in limbo.

Lakeside assistant head coach Brian Lugaga says they are unable to train properly on sub-standard courts.

“We don’t have a court to train and we are forced to use a Primary School facility where we’re forced to alter training patterns to avoid contact with them as a result of the coronavirus pandemic..

The challenge has been tougher for the self-sponsored Ladybucks, according to coach Micahel Dave.

“We have challenges in terms of traveling and mostly rely on well-wishers to assist us. We have approached several companies including the county government but so far nothing has materialised.

“We do not have a training venue that we can call our own and the facilities we use belong to schools under strict restrictions from the Ministry of Education; it’s more difficult with exams around the corner,” he said.

Ladybucks played their first match over the weekend losing 21-86 to Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) while Lakeside have lost their first four matches against EMYBA, Thunder, Eldonets and KPA.
