Kipyegon, Obiri unstoppable in Doha Diamond League

Olympic 1500m champion Faith Kipyegon continued her red-hot form as she stormed to yet another victory in the women’s 800m as the curtains came down on the 2020 Diamond League series in Doha on Friday night.

Kipyegon who is unbeaten since the restart of the coronavirus-hit season dropped from her favoured 1500m to the two-lap race where she clocked a new personal best of 1:57.68 erasing the previous mark of 1:58.02

The 2013 world champion Eunice Sum finished a distant ninth in 2:02.42

In the corresponding men’s race world 800m bronze medallist Ferguson Rotich cruised to victory after clocking 1:44.16 ahead of Britain’s Elliot Giles who finished second in 1:44.56

Commonwealth Games champion Wycliffe Kinyamal placed third in 1:45.68 as world 1500m champion Timothy Cheruiyot who dropped from his specialty tested defeat for the first time this season as he came home eight in 1:46.78

Elsewhere, world 5000m champion Hellen Obiri clocked a world leading time of 8:22.54 to win the women’s 3000m race dominated by Kenyans.

The 2015 world cross country champion Agnes Tirop came home second in 8:22.92 as world 3000m steeplechase champion Beatrice Chepkoech settled for the third spot in 8:22.92

World 5000m silver medallist Margaret Chelimo (8:24.76) and the 2015 world 3000m steeplechase champion Hyvin Kiyeng (8:25.13) placed fourth and fifth respectively.

African Games 1500m champion Qualiyne Kiprop finished 11th as world under-20 5000m champion Beatrice Chebet ranked 13th.

It was however not all rosy for Kenyans in the men’s 1500m where world 3000m steeplechase champion Conseslus Kipruto did not finish the race as Bethwell Birgen placed 10th.
