Kipchoge Keino Stadium to host Devolution Conference games

The Kipchoge Keino stadium, which is under construction, will host the 8th edition of the 2023 Devolution Conference games from August 15–19 in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

On Tuesday evening, Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ababu Namwamba assessed the construction progress and urged the contractors to honor the set deadlines so that it could be used for the Devolution Conference games.

Namwamba warned that the government will only tolerate timely delivery and good workmanship.

While noting the importance of the facility for the three North Rift counties in nurturing talent Namwamba underlined the need for both the Kipchoge Keino and Kamariny stadiums in Elgeyo Marakwet to be equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure with world-class specifications befitting the high number of standard international athletes who hail from the region.

“This region is the hub of athletics since many stars come from here. It only makes sense that the government avails an avenue that can motivate more young runners to pursue their dreams.”

Namwamba backed Kenya’s bid to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), noting that Kipchoge Keino stadium will be among the stadia to host the event.

“We are positive that our bid will be accepted. This facility is among those earmarked to host the games, so we want the project to be carried out carefully.”

Sports Permanent Secretary (PS) Peter Tum said the government will ensure the stadium meets the required standards to honor track legends Kipchoge Keino.

Tum said the government is closely monitoring the progress of the construction and is ready to facilitate the activities of the contractors to ensure they do not stray from the agreed-upon project plan. 

The 2023 Devolution Conference games will feature different sports, including marathons aimed at showcasing the sports prowess in Uasin Gishu, particularly in athletics, and promoting local talents from the grassroots.
