Kimanzi eyeing strong finish as KHU title drifts away

Wazalendo Hockey Club head coach Fidhelis Kimanzi has urged his players to soldier on and end this season on a high even as the Premier League title continue to slip from their hands.

Despite thrashing Western Jaguars 3-0 on Saturday at City Park, Wazalendo remain second on the log with 29 points, four points adrift of run-away leaders Butali Sugar Warriors who sit at the summit of the league with 33 points with a game in hand.

With four matches to go for his side, Kimanzi has already given up on their title chances noting that Butali are destined to defend their title.

“The league is very competitive and for me I think it will be won by Butali. However, for us, we would have achieved what we wanted because my boys are playing good hockey and that is what we want. Also, I think we have been competitive this season compared to previous seasons,” said Kimanzi .

The South-B- based side is set to face off with third-placed Greensharks and thereafter take on Parklands before playing leaders Butali. They’ll later wind up the season with a clash against former champions Kenya Police.

Kimanzi further disclosed that they would be concentrating more on their creativity as his side is struggling to create chances past their opponents.

“We need to create more chances and utilise them. We are playing Sharks next Sunday and it is going to be a competitive match as well. We are now going to prepare ourselves to try to win the game,” Kimanzi added.

Meanwhile, Kenya Police returned to winning ways after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Jaguars on Sunday.

The law enforcers have been a pale shadow of their former self as they now sit fourth on the log with 21 points, 12 points adrift of Butali with the former having a game in hand.

In the Women’s Premier League, Kenyatta University bounced back to edge fellow students Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) by a solitary goal having lost 2-0 to Amira Sailors on Saturday.
