Kimani to lead NOCKs Strength and Conditioning program

The National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) has appointed former Kenya Sevens Strength and Conditioning (S&C) coach Geoffrey Kimani as the lead consultant of its Strength and Conditioning Program.

Kimani, who boasts a wealth of experience and has worked with the national rugby team Shujaa, football and athletics squads over the past decade has signed a 10-month contract will begin his duties immediately with the preparations for the Olympic Games set for Tokyo his major task.

He will also oversee the preparations of Kenya’s teams for the 2021 Commonwealth Youth Games as well as the 2022 Youth Olympics to be held in Dakar, Senegal.

The Elite Development Committee constituted by NOC-K, comprising of top coaches in the country which has been assisting teams on volunteer basis; and this has now been formalized by appointing Kimani to officially lead the consultancy with Federations.

Speaking during Kimani’s unveiling on Tuesday, NOCK Acting Secretary General Francis Mutuku noted that strength and conditioning is fast becoming an integral part of the sport.

“The Strength and Conditioning Program is part of NOC-K strategic objective on Elite Athlete Development arising from its Strategic Plan 2019 – 2024. This is the first step towards the overall plan of setting up a Sports Science Facility that will serve all sports in Kenya.’’

On his part Kimani said the incorporation of Strength and Conditioning is no longer a choice rather a necessity.

“The S&C program arises from the challenges within Federations, most of whom have no structured S&C Programs. Through ground work done by Elite Development Committee, it has been noted that most disciplines will have the coach incorporating Strength training/rehab and prehab into their training. Even the best of our coaches need to keep learning and updating themselves with new research coming out every so often.  If Kenya is to keep competing with the World, all sports need to deliberately incorporate S&C in their training processes and tie them to program designs and competition cycles,” said Kimani.

Kimani will also assist in the development of curriculum for university students pursuing Exercise and Sports Science.

He will also work with specific national coaches interested in this field, under the National Federations, to nurture upcoming coaches through workshops and trainings with an eye towards increasing the Strength and Conditioning talent pool in the country.
