KCBs Munala gutted by loss of blocker Chebet

KCB head coach Japheth Munala has bemoaned the absence of Loreen Chebet noting it will be a major blow for the team as he embarks on ending a Kenya Volleyball Federation league hiatus.

The fast-rising middle blocker completed a return to her former club Kenya Prisons last week and Munala is regretting the loss of his ‘wild card’ he was banking on in his pursuit for the KVF glory in the playoffs set for November 22-24 at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

The Bankers last lifted the coveted gong in 2006 and their bid to recapture the diadem has been dealt a further blow with the Kwanthanze alumnus now set to reinforce Prisons squad ahead of the playoffs.

“Chebet was a dependable player and we will miss her services during the playoffs but we are working tirelessly to see who will fill the void. The fact that she is joining champions makes it a big blow because we will face off with her team and it will not be easy to dethrone them,” he said.

Chebet, who was part of the national team that featured in the FIVB World Cup in Japan in September, had signed a two-year deal with the Bankers mid this year.

KCB, champions Kenya Prisons, Kenya Pipeline and DCI are fighting for the women league title while GSU, KPA, Kenya Prisons and KDF will be trading swords for the men’s glory at the KVF league climax.

“This year’s playoffs will be very tough because all the four teams have prepared really well and this was evident during the KVF final leg but we are ready to break the hoodoo,” he added.

KCB finished a top of the national regular women’s league which ended two weeks ago, ahead of Kenya Prisons, former Kenya Pipeline and this year’s Mwalimu Nyerere Tournament winners DCI respectively.

The top two teams in each category will also book automatic tickets to next year’s Africa Club Championship.
