Kangaru to face St Pauls in 15s final at Embu Games

Embu County Rugby 15’s champions Kangaru School have shifted focus to the Regional Games after reaching the finals of the ongoing Embu County Secondary School Games in Kangaru.

The Masimbas outclassed Yoder Karwigi Secondary School 29-0 in the semi finals to set up last year’s County finals with St Paul’s Kevote.

The Gorillas demolished King David High School Kamama 28-3 in the other semi finals to book their ticket against Kangaru.

The host scored five tries converting two against a non attacking Karwigi.

They scored three tries through mauls with eighth man Daniel Mugambi, scrummer Benson Muriuki and second row Argwings  Mugendi with Lincoln Njagi converting one to make it 17-00 at half time.

In the second half Kangaru’s captain Collins Maina made a sunsentional run between the Karwigi’s defense releasing the ball to flanker Brian Ngondi who scored a try in the beneath of the post with fly half Lincoln Njagi doing what he loves best converting it to make it 24-00.

Kangaru’s centre two Solomon Kiio killed the match with his last unconverted try at full time to make it 29-00.

Kangaru’s head coach Benson Mwenda is optimistic of making it to the the East Africa games saying that the journey is underway after making it to the regionals.

“We are taking each game at a time we are now in the regionals now we have to go back to intensive training ahead of the regionals in Meru next week.”

The former Kangaru alumni is not afraid of his tactics being used against him since he has won all his matches using mauls.

“That’s our strength but if our opponents use it against us we will change our game play and use our flanks, line out and penalties which we are also good in.”

St Paul’s Kevote head coach Benson Musembi believes Kangaru are the better side as they head to the finals having beaten them in the sub county.

“Kangaru are a bit stronger having beaten us in the sub counties but we’ll stick to our game plan and prevent them from playing their mauls which is their strong point.”

Musembi believes that denying their stronger opponents the ball is the secret of winning against them.

The finals will be a repeat of last year where Kangaru narrowly won 6-0 against Kevote.
