Kamworor confident of retaining title

Defending champion Geoffrey Kamworor is confident on retaining his title at this year’s World Half Marathon slated for March 24 in Valencia, Spain.

The 25-year-old who was named by Athletics Kenya in a five-man squad on Tuesday will be seeking a record third-consecutive win in the biennial competition.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Kamworor who is also a two-time World Cross Country champion said that he is in good shape for the race, adding that he’ll only need to polish on a few aspects before the competition.

“I am currently progressing very well in my preparations. With about two months to go I’m just polishing the grey areas, he said, adding that, “I won’t be leaving any stone unturned.”

Similarly, Kamworor has hailed the team that was selected alongside him, including 2016 runners-up Bedan Karoki, Family Bank Half Marathon champion Joram Okombo, as well as Leonard Barsoton and Barselius Kipyego.

“For me the team selected is very strong. I know them since we have competed before and I am optimistic that we will have a great teamwork there because we will be cooperating as usual,” charged Kamworor.

Having won the National Police Service Cross Country last weekend, the policeman disclosed that his next stop will be at the National Cross Country Championships slated for February 10 as he works out on his speed work.

“Cross Country helps me especially on building my speed and that is why I will be participating in the nationals as it will act as a build-up to the World Half Marathon,” added Kamworor.

The decorated athlete enjoyed a stellar season last year that culminated in his win at the New York City Marathon managing to beat his compatriot Wilson Kipsang, a fete he will be hoping to maintain.
