Kakamega MCAs wrangle over Sh35m Homeboyz funding

Tempers flared at the Kakamega County Assembly on Thursday, as legislators debated a move to transfer the entire Sports Program budget to funding Kakamega Homeboyz.

Ultimately, the proposal presented on the floor of the house by the budget committee, sailed through despite a heated opposition led by Butsotso Central MCA Walter Andati.

Andati, backed by fellow Amani National Congress members, argued it was irrational to allocate Sh35m for only one team while shunning those in the grassroots.

“What the governor doing is wrong. Our youths are not having sports! How can one team take money for our youths?” Andati lamented.

A total 29 ANC members rallied to vote against the proposal but were outnumbered by their 48 Orange Democratic Movement counterparts that voted in its favour.

Kenyan Premier League (KPL) club Homeboyz landed an annual sponsorship deal with the county government two years ago when the county assembly passed the Sports Bill 2018.

The KPL season ended last month in controversial fashion through an announcement by Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president who declared Gor Mahia FC – who held a seven-point lead over Homeboyz – are champions.

KPL have rebuked that pronouncement, writing to continental governing body CAF as well as winning a Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) tussle that reversed Mwendwa’s decision.
