Kabras aiming another season double, says Sikuta

Kenya Cup champions Kabras Sugar will be looking to defend their titles when the new season begins, captain Dan Sikuta has said.

According to Sikuta, Kabras who also won the Enterprise Cup are keen to build on last season’s success and maintain their dominance.

Kabras defeated Menengai Oilers in the Kenya Cup final to win the league for the first time since 2015/2016 season and later on put the icing on the cake by outwitting their fellow rugby heavyweights KCB RFC in the Enterprise Cup final.

As teams embark on preseason ahead of the 2022/2023 season, Sikuta says they cannot rest on their laurels as they aim to repeat last season’s heroics.

“Preseason training started on August 18 after the general elections and we have been building on the basics and now we are at the third stage; so everything is going well according to our plan.

“Remember we are the champions; so we need to defend our Kenya Cup this season including the Enterprise Cup. Nothing is going to change a lot, we just need to polish our structures and work on our game pattern in defense and attack,” remarked Sikuta.

Kenya Cup serial winners KCB have already thrown down the gauntlet to their arch rivals saying they will do everything possible to regain back the coveted title, but Sikuta says they are not solely focusing on KCB.

“We are not focusing on KCB alone. We are 12 teams in the league so every game, every team wants to win so as the defending champions we need to do all we can without zeroing in a specific team. KCB are one of our toughest rivals, but remember we are playing home and away so we need to win our games starting with the first one which will be on the November 26.”

Kabras Sugar have not strengthened their squad yet but the Lurambi Boys’ training has been highly boosted by the return of their Championship winning coach Jerome Muller, who was holidaying in his home country South Africa.

“We haven’t gotten new players yet but we have to take up what our coaches have been giving to us. The coach returned to the country a few days ago and now our management is intact, we are now trying to work hard in training.”

The defending champions are yet to play any preseason friendly but will be hoping to have a couple of them in the coming days. Other teams in the Kenya cup are currently training hard ahead of the new season which will see the league welcome Catholic Monks and Mean Machine who were promoted to the top tier.
