Jeruto leads as Kenya shines in 3000m steeple in Zagreb

African champion Norah Jeruto secured her second 3000m-steeplechase event victory leading compatriots Daisy Jepkemei and Joan Chepkemoi into a 1,2,3 finish at the IAAF World Challenge in Zagreb, Croatia.

The 21 year-old Jeruto powered across the line in 9:04.56, only marginally slower than the lifetime best of 9:03.70 she clocked in Berlin just over 48 hours earlier.

Jeruto won by more than 15 seconds over compatriots Daisy Jepkemei and Joan Chepkemoi, who ran lifetime bests of 9:19.68 and 9 20.22 respectively to make a Kenyan clean podium sweep.

Jeruto, took over from the pacesetter with four laps to go, she let loose to wage a serious race against the clock. One lap later she was five seconds ahead of her nearest pursuer, a margin she doubled over the penultimate lap.

Former World Youth and African Junior Championships silver medalist Davis Kiplangat made it for the runners up position in the men’s 3000m.

World Under 18 Championships titleholder Selemon Barega of Ethiopia, took the race honors and set a personal best of 7:38.90 as Kiplangat (7:38.90) managed to hold off Mohammed Ahmed of Canada, who clocked 7:40.49, a lifetime best.

Kiplangat had a consoling performance after ranking 37th in the 5000m at the recently concluded IAAF World Championships in London. Less than a week later in Birmingham Diamond League Kiplangat finished third with a time of 7:40.63 in the 3000m event.

In the two-lap event, American Ajee Wilson, the World Championships 800m bronze medalist, strolled across the line in 1:59.13, easily holding off African Games bronze medalist Winny Chebet, who clocked 1:59.54. Briton Lindsey Sharp took third place 1:59.76.
