Invest in sports facilities to spur talent growth, urges MP Wanyama

Despite the amazing talent in different sports disciplines, Kenya’s sports men and women are lacking proper exposure due to lack of sports facilities.

This is according to former national men’s volleyball team player, Dan Wanyama, who is the Member of Parliament for Webuye West constituency.

Speaking to Citizen Digital on the sidelines of the 13th edition of the Amaco International Volleyball Tournament at the Eldoret National Polytechnic, Wanyama called on the Ministry of Sports and county governments to take the appropriate measures to save many talents.

“As a member of the parliamentary committee on sports we have set aside 35percent of the tax collected from betting companies  to be given to the ministry of sports for establishing sports academies in every county, but where will the young sports men and women play?”he querried adding that, “For now Kenya can’t host any major sporting event because of lack of sporting facilities.”

“In volleyball, the Kasarani Gymnasium that we relied on isn’t enough to host many teams taking part in the continental events, that’s why our athletes will always go to play their qualifiers outside the country,” he lamented.

In the just concluded international event in Eldoret, visiting American teams were amazed to play their first ever competitive matches outside a gymnasium, with Wanyama  calling on the County Government of Uasin Gichu to consider investing on a state-of- the art volleyball gymnasium.

“The number of fans witnessed in this event is amazing, a good volleyball facility would have even attract more,” he said.

“This talent needs to be nurtured and they should also be able to have a feel of the status of the international facilities as soon as possible.”

Some 93 local and international clubs took part in the two-day event.
