Hope for Vihiga teams as county launches stadium construction

There is hope in the horizon for Vihiga United and Vihiga Queens after the county government of Vihiga on Tuesday   launched the construction of Hamisi Stadium that will be used by the two teams as home grounds.

 Speaking during the event, County Governor Dr.Wilbur Otichillo said the stadium, projected to cost sh 35 million, will host 25 000 fans upon completion.

“As a county government we are committed, and we want to lift sports in this county and from today you will see the difference, we have the funds and we want to have an international stadium,” the governor said.

“We will also be open to constructing a volleyball pitch here later after we finish this so that we can support our talents from Vihiga,” he added.

Otichillo added that the facility will be expanded to be able to host other sports such as rugby, volleyball, netball, and boxing among others at a further cost of Sh 15 million.

According to the county communications director Victor Wetende, the  county government has made a commitment to supporting the two teams that are participating in the national leagues as part of their plan of creating jobs to the youth.

“We promised people jobs and more so young people and sports is one area we want to perfect in so we will support the teas not just by constructing a home ground for them.”

Once complete, it’s projected the stadium will be the second largest in the greater Western region after Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.

Vihiga United play in the Kenyan top flight football league while Vihiga Queens are leading the women Premier League standings.
