Gor, Leopards set up FKF Cup final showdown
Gor Mahia FC set up a mouthwatering FKF Cup final with AFC Leopards when they edged Bidco United 4-1 on penalties during Sunday’s semi-final clash at the Utalii Grounds in Nairobi.
Their derby rivals had also progressed to the final via penalties in the earlier last four match, winning the shootout 6-5 against the debuting side Equity FC whose brave run finally came to an end.
Gor were held in a 1-1 draw in regular time and Equity forced Leopards to a barren stalemate but it was the two most successful clubs in the country that held their nerves in the shootouts to progress.
Leopards had only one change from the team which started against Tusker in the quarters but failed to break Equity’s resolute defence.
Captain Isaac Kipyegon, Said Tsuma, Munene, Elvis Rupia, Clyde Senaji and Hansel Ochieng scored their penalties for Leopards with Austin Odhiambo missing from the spot.
Josephat Waititu and Levian Ochieng cost Equity what would be a huge upset as both missed from six yards out.
AFC Leopards coach lauded their opponents saying that they played a good game more than other top tier teams.
“They also deserved the chance to qualify because they displayed a good game of soccer but it was our time”.
Keneth Muguna took Gor in front after only four minutes through a well curved freekick after Alpha Onyango was brought down outside the box.
Their lead lasted only for 15 minutes after David Orem equalised connecting Steven Waruru’s header past Gad Matthews.
Gor were reduced to ten men with full back Philemon Otieno receiving match orders with 5 minutes to the final whistle.
The final will be played on 4th July at a ground to be named by the fedearion as the winner will walk away with Ksh 2 million.
The winner will also get the ticket to represent Kenya in the CAF confederations cup with the team which will be in the summit of the league will play in the CAF champions league next season.
