Free safari planned for journalists after Nairobi WU18

The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) has organized for a four day Safari for foreign and local journalists who will cover the World Under 18 Championships scheduled for July 12-16 at the Safaricom Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi.

KTB CEO Betty Radier said the championship comes at the right time when Kenya needs to market itself as a sports tourism destination just before the general elections.

“The IAAF World U18 Championships will afford Kenya the opportunity to host more than 2,000 athletes from more than 130 countries from varied parts of the world.

“We see this as an opportunity to cast a spotlight on the best that our country to a global audience as Kenya will have the privilege of hosting more than 300 local and international media. We will, therefore, seize this moment to prime Kenya as a sports destination,” KTB CEO, Dr. Betty Radier said.

The KTB will work with the LOC media committee to pick out the journalists who will enjoy this great offer. The offer is also a way of enticing journalists to come to Nairobi to cover the event especially after a number of countries pulled out of the championship on security grounds.

LOC CEO Mwangi Muthee appreciated KTB’s involment in the global event.

“If you want to talk about of business development you cannot leave out sports as a tool to drive the same. The government has spent so much to organize the championship and when you see KTB, you see the government involvement,” Muthee added.

With less than a month before the IAAF world Under 18 Championship in Nairobi, the Local Organising committee got a shot in the arm with a massive 20 million shillings boost from the Kenya Tourism Board.

First held in 1999, the IAAF World U18 Championships (formerly named the IAAF World Youth Championships in Athletics up to November 2015) is a global athletics event comprising track and field events for competitors who are 17 or younger.

The biennial event, in its last edition, is organized by International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).  The first edition of these championships was held Bydgoszcz Poland in 1999 and the event was hosted for the first time in Africa by Morocco in 2005.

“We are proud to be in partnership with the Kenya Tourism Board. The World U18 Championships are a great opportunity for us to honor our youth and promote the best of Kenya. Preparations are in high gear and I would like to urge all Kenyans to turn up in high numbers and support our athletes,” said LOC CEO, Mwangi Muthee.
