Fiery Matano puts Gor Mahia on notice

Tusker FC head coach Robert Matano is confident that his team will displace Gor Mahia on the league summit and win their 12th title.

The Brewers last won the gong in 2016 under Ugandan Paul Nkata and Matano, fondly referred as “The Lion” in football circles believes they can challenge Gor’s stranglehold.

Courtesy of their laboured 1-0 win over Bandari at the weekend at the Ruaraka grounds, the brewers are placed second on the KPL standing on 21 points, four adrift of table-topping Gor even though they have played one game more than the champions.

“My players worked haRd and finally we managed to pick three crucial points,” he said, adding that, “a lot of my players played average football but I will address the issue and I am sure going into our next assignment against Kariobangi Sharks this weekend they will have adopted to the game plan.’’

The veteran coach also bemoaned the poor state of the waterlogged Ruaraka saying it interrupted flow of play.

” It(the pitch) was not in good condition due to the heavy downpour. My players were sliding anyhow and that should not be the case. I think it’s high time the county government in conjunction with our sponsors Kenya Breweries Limited refurbished it.”

At Moi Stadium in Kisumu, Gor Mahia dropped two points after registering a barren draw against Ulinzi Stars thus remaining on top of the log with 25 points.

Elsewhere, Kakamega Homeboyz beat Mathare 3-1 to increase their points to 20 to occupy the third position on the log while KCB walloped Kariobangi Sharks 5-2 to sit fourth on the standings.

Ulinzi Stars complete  the top-five bracket with 18 points, same as KCB  although the bankers have a superior goal difference.
