Equity stage late come back to defeat Eldonets

Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) men’s Premier League title hopefuls Equity Bank defeated sophomores Eldonets 64-59 thanks to a spirited second half fight-back in which they outscored the Platinum Credit-sponsored side 41-30 at the MUSO Court in Eldoret.

Eldonets set out to garner maximum points from this weekend’s matches but will have to contend with the three they got following their 64-49 hammering of Umoja on Saturday.
In a classic exhibition of poor focus, the home side, Eldonets, dominated the opening two quarters only to implode in the second half by allowing a equity to score 12 unanswered points through uncontested layups to establish a 57-47 lead with 5.34 left on the clock.
Eldonets’ bid for a late comeback was futile as Equity’s excellent defense thwarted all their attempts.
While attributing their weekend success to their seasoned charges coming up clutch, Equity coach Carey ‘T9’ Odhiambo singled out shooting guard Davis Siaji for praise, after his master class in the fourth quarter proved instrumental in their comeback victory.
“Our win today is down to experience and discipline as every player played their role very well.
“Davy (Siaji) is one of the most experienced players in the team and we know we can count on him in games like this one.”
His opposite number Morris Ouma who cut a downcast figure on the sidelines of the MUSO Court rallied his troops to work on their concentration more so in the closing stages.
“We are a good side but games like these remind us that we need to be on our toes if we are to realize our season ambitions.
We let the game slip through our hands by our poor defense in the second half.”
One of the areas his team will have to work on is preventing their opponents from making fast-break points as it proved costly on Sunday after they allowed Equity to make four straight uncontested layups to surrender their lead.
Eldonets will host Kisumu Lakeside on 25th September while Equity will square it out with UON Terror at the Nyayo gymnasium next Sunday.
