Equity, KPA seal FIBA quarters slots

Equity Hawks and Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) reached the FIBA Africa Clubs Championships quarter-finals with dominant wins on Day Four of the competition.

KPA won 73-65 against MB2ALL of Madagascar in Pool B while their compatriots Equity defeated Victoria Club of DRC Congo 84-75.

Equity had started the game slowly and in were already trailing 10-5 five minutes into the first quarter but they got into the rhythm in the when they blazed past hapless V-Club to lead 42-34 by half time.

The Bankers never looked threatened after that with the early offence deployed by Equity Coach Carey “T9” Odhiambo helping 4 of his players reach double digits .

FIBA Africa Zone 5 MVP Belinda Okoth lead the scoring with 23 points, Shooting Guard Selina Okumu whose ball handling was a problem for the V-Club defense had 19 points with Hilda Indasi and Betty Kananu following closely with 15 points each.

The game ended 84-75 in the bankers favour making it the highest scoring game of the tournament so far. The result meant Equity Hawks advanced to the quarters ahead of their final group match against InterClube from Angola.

KPA were desperately in need of a win to boost their hopes of progressing having gone down 71-61 defeat to I.N.S.S of DRC Congo on Monday.

And they started brightly against Victoria Club, racing to a 20-16 lead in the opening quarter before going 12-12, 23-16 and 18-21 in the final three.

The win left team head coach Antony Ojukwu with a smile on his face citing hard work paid for them.

“We showed a lot of improvement, energy and team work in our match and we need to focus now on the quarter final,” he said.
