Equity hit back to tie playoff series with KPA

Equity Bank secured an impressive 64-47 victory over over KPA as they stomped back on the champions’ advantage to level their Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) playoff final series at 1-1 in Mombasa.

KPA won Game One 67-57 to turn the pressure on their opponents and Equity posted an emphatic response to take Game Two thanks to the brilliance of Selina Okumu and Belinda Okoth.

The two combined for 34 points to lead their side to victory with Bridgid Nanzala of KPA scoring 13 points while her teammate Hellen Okoth scored eight.

Equity were the better side right from the off, winning first three-quarters at 16-08, 12-11, 19-11 respectively before settling for 17-17 draw in the last quarter.

“We were well prepared after losing first match. We had a lengthy talk as a team and it was seen in today’s match after being effective from the first minute to the last one. We shall be more aggressive in the remaining matches despite the fact that we shall be at home,” Equity head coach David Maina said.

His KPA counterpart Antony Ojukwu blamed over-excitement for their loss.

“Players switched off completely. I think yesterday’s win made them more excited but whatever they have done to us in our home court we will do the same at theirs,” Ojukwu said.

The two sides meet on Saturday, Sunday and Monday for their final series matches at the Nyayo Gymnasium in Nairobi.
