CS Amina, Magoha laud Under-16 Copa Africa Championship

Sports and Heritage Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed on Monday December 2, officially opened the second edition of the Copa Coca-Cola Africa Tournament taking place at the Mpesa Foundation Academy Grounds in Thika, Kiambu County.

The CS who was accompanied by her counterparts, Prof. George Magoha of Education and Prof. Margret Kobia from Youth and Gender docket, praised the organisers for giving Kenya the hosting rights for the second year running saying the youth fiesta is a marvelous platform to churn out new talent.

“Many successful footballers have been nurtured through these tournaments and as ministry we will continue to support all the organisers and ensure they have the best environment to work into,” he said.

While delivering President Uhuru Kenyatta’s speech who was to open the four-day championship, CS Kobia reiterated the government’s commitment in supporting sports in the country.

“My administration remains committed to improving sporting condition in this country. In this year’s budget, allocation of sports, culture and arts department were allocated Ksh 5.3billion to cater for sporting activities in the country,’’ she revealed.

On his part, Magoha said the newly launched Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) will spur sports growth in the country.

“The ministry values sports and CBC is ensuring all talented children will not go unnoticed. With CBC it is easy to identify and nurture talent and I can say it will be the next big thing in Kenya,’’ he told.

The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Under-16 champions Serani Boys carry a sense of duty for the hosts at the championship featuring countries from diverse Confederation of African Football (CAF) zones, including Cecafa, Wafu, Cosafa and Cosafa.

In the inaugural edition held in Nakuru last year, Kenya claimed a clean sweep after St. Anthony’s Boys Kitale and Moi Girls Nangili overcame Nigeria and Zimbabwe in the finals to clinch the boys and girls honours respectively.

Other countries featuring in this year’s edition include Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Others are  Zambia, Ethiopia, Namibia, Uganda, Burkina Faso, Angola and Botswana. The championship will end on December 5.
