Cooperative Alliance of Kenya launches charity road race

The inaugural Cooperative Alliance of Kenya (CAK) Ushirika road race is set to be held on June 30 in capital Nairobi.

The event will comprise of 7km main race, 10km elite race, 5km CEO’s run and 2km race for children with the winners in the elite race pocketing sh100,000 in both men and women categories.

Speaking during the launch of the race today at the Athletics Kenya (AK) headquarters, CAK Chief Operating Officer Steve Otieno said they are targeting to raise at least sh50 million to assist needy students to not only achieve basic education but also support their social life.

“The need for learners to access formal education is still a challenge and despite numerous efforts to address this issue the gap has continued to widen and thus this has propelled us as cooperative societies to come up with a way to support additional learners,” said Otieno.

Otieno revealed that the unveiling of the proceeds to the learners will be done on December 11.

Registration is done through M-Pesa PayBill number 859989 with elite athletes required to pay sh1000 while for other races they will pay sh500.

After the first edition, Otieno disclosed that they intend to spread the initiative to each end every county since they boast close to 22,000 cooperative societies across the country.

At the same function AK Nairobi branch chairman Barnabas Korir termed the event a noble course and assured that the federation will provide the technical expertise needed to make the event a success.

“We have been thinking about this for quite sometime and when they came with the proposal, we embraced it because it will also go along way in giving athletes proper support when it comes to education,” said Korir.

All races will start and end at the Uhuru Park with the first race set to kick off at 7.30am.
