Coaches hail new FKF Womens Cup tournament

Kenyan Women Premier League (KWPL) clubs coaches has hailed Football Kenya Federation (FKF) move to launch the – FKF women’s Cup Tournament saying it will give them an adequate time to gauge their players.

In an exclusive interview with Citizen Digital, Vihiga Queens’s tactician Alex Alumira said the move will enable the Federation to gauge the level of competition between the premier league and the division one.

Alumira who guided Queens in clinching the KWPL title last season, added that the tournament will enable them as coaches to spot great and unique talents more so in the division one side which may have to sign into their respective clubs.

“That is a fantastic idea from the Federation. We have been longing for this but thank God it has arrived in the right time. As long as the tournament includes teams which take part in the division one, it will enable coaches to spot good players.”

Alumira’s sentiments were echoed by his Ulinzi Starlets counterpart Joseph Wambua who urged players to showcase their talents to the fullest because they may land good deals with different clubs.

“This is time for the players to utilize this chance. It has never happened before so I am expecting each one of them to work hard in whichever positions they play . I am expecting a high level of competition from participating clubs knowing that the winner will pocket a million shillings upon the completion of the tournament,”

He added: “After premier league and the division one league were divided into two zones A and B, number of matches has decreased as opposed to previous seasons. So by the introduction of the tournament, players will have many matches to play and that will help them to keep fit. Our first match will be against MTG this Saturday in Malindi so we are travelling today (Wednesday) early enough so as to familiarize with coastal region, I am hoping for the best and my aim is to win the title,” he said.

Total number of 16 matches will be on card this weekend. At the Eldoret ASK Grounds on Saturday SOLASA Queens will host S.E.P Ladies, Gusii Starlets will play Wadadia at the Gusii Stadium, Nyuki Starlets will lock horns with Eldoret Falcons at the Approved School Kakamega as Mombasa Olympic will host Zetech Sparks at the Serani Grounds in Mombasa.
