Coach Leti explains poor performance of athletes, wants more support
Athletics coach Bruce Leti has cited lack of support as a major hindrance in the development of upcoming athletes in the country.
Leti who runs Kigari Athletics Camp in Embu County
says many athletes from the region have not actualised their dreams as they
lack basic needs to sustain them in camp.
He also bemoaned lack of training facilities urging
the local leadership in Embu County to intervene and help the young runners
actualize their dreams.
“We really need support from our leaders for these
athletes to be able to continue with their training. The challenge is not even the
training it is actually the support system which is not adequate. I have tried
to reach out to various leaders in our region including our governor but I have
not been successful. I am still optimistic that I can access them and elaborate
our challenges,” said Leti.
Similarly, Leti has decried lack of training
facilities in the region which further makes the training expensive as they are
forced to pay for private facilities.
Leti is credited
with identifying and nurturing Africa 10,000m champion Caroline Nyaga who he
says her priority this season is to secure qualification for this year’s World
Championships and next year’s Olympic Games.
“She recently competed in an international event where
she missed the qualifying mark by sevens second. It is still early in the
season and we are hopeful she will make it. We still have a lot of work to do
but we will there,” said Leti.
