Clubs bring the big guns to hunt Christie Sevens glory

All roads lead to the spiritual home of Kenyan rugby, the RFUEA Grounds, this weekend for the 54th edition of the Christie Sevens.

Participating teams have unleashed star-studded line-ups ahead of the competition that will mark the fifth and penultimate round 0f the National Sevens Circuit with hosts Kenya Harlequins leaving nothing to chance.

The Quins will have their Kenya internationals trio of Dennis Muhanji, Eden Agero and Patrice “situational” Agunda on display with Ugandans Joseph Aredo and Solomon Okia also set to debut for the Victor Sudi-coached side.

The duo, fresh from international duty with the Uganda Sevens national team, will be a huge boost for the Quins who are without injured Kenya sevens powerhouse Frank Wanyama.

Christie Sevens defending Champions and Sepetuka winners Kabras Sugar have not been left behind as they get set to unchain some of their fiercest names.

Ugandan talisman Philip Wokorach who missed both the Prinsloo 7s and Sepetuka 7s as Kabras claimed a Cup win since he was involved with national duties for the Uganda 7s team.

Kabras were the main climbers in the national sevens circuit standings after the conclusion of the previous leg in Eldoret, the Sepetuka Sevens and are in the pool of death against hosts Harlequins, Strathmore Leos and MKU (Thika).

The Sugar Millers scooped the Main Cup in Eldoret; garnering 22 points in the process which saw them improve from sixth to second on the circuit standings with a total of 63 points, five adrift leaders Menengai Cream Homeboyz.

Third-placed Impala Saracens will be will be seeking to stay in contention for the overall circuit title and will count on the inclusion of Kenya Simbas duo Eric Kere and Leo Seje as well as Sammy Oliech to swing the tide in their favour.

The Sarries who have garnered 62 points after four rounds will be glad with the return of Captain Leon Adongo and George Okowa who have been sidelined since Driftwood 7s with a groin injury and a rib bruise respectively.

Nakuru Head Coach Mitch Ocholla also named his squad for this weekend’s Christie Sevens assignment and will be hunting for a Cup win this season and add to the already 58 points accumulated.

Shujaa stars Oscar “Wheels” Ouma and Nelson Oyoo have made the cut for the third time in a row and they join the veteran skipper Geoffrey Ominde. The trio will headline the star studded Nakuru squad.

They battle it out with Impala Saracens, Mean Machine and Kisii RFC in Pool B.

“We will approach each game one at a time and will not underrate any team in our pool. Very tricky games ahead but we hope to record positive results and a possibility of winning the overall title if possible,” Ocholla told Citizen Digital.

Wounded Kenya Cup side Nondescript has included Shujaa superstar Dennis Ombachi and Simbas fly half Biko Adema in their squad as they look to bounce back to winning ways after struggling in the circuit.

The availability of Ombachi who has the size and strength to be a punishing defender and the cool head required and mastering the breakdown area is an added advantage.

The quick hands of Adema, his speed handling skills and superb play will be of great help to the squad. In pool C, Nondies will play Western Bulls at 11.10am, Homeboyz at 1.30pm and Mwamba at 3.30pm in their last game of the day.
