Chepkemoi, Koskei win Bomet 5K titles
Betty Chepkemoi clocked 15:50:21 to win the women’s 5000m title as Edwin Koskei took the men’s race in 14:48:41 at the Bomet County Track and Field meet on Saturday.
Chepkemoi edged a tight battle with Emmaculate Chepkirui with the World Under-18 silver medalist finishing second in 16:18:95.
Robert Bore (14:88:39) and Vincent Kirui (15:42:64) were second and third respectively in the men’s race.
Athletics Kenya (AK) chairman for Bomet County John Kimetto maintained only those who achieved qualifying times will be selected for the regional competition set for later June in Narok.
“In Narok we shall compete against five other counties and later in Nairobi where a team will be selected to represent at the Africa Track and Field competition in Nigeria,” Kimetto said.
Martha Chepkemoi won the javelin throw with a throw of 35.40 meters and was the only athlete to reach the women’s qualifying throw of 35.0m.
“This wasn’t my best throw. I had a challenge with the javelin stick because it was not the professional one that is normally used at the national level. The weather it was very windy so I can do better,” she said.
Another strong performer was Kevin Kimutai, who threw 46.20m in the men’s discus, ahead of Robert Kipsang who recorded 38.10m.
Miriam Cherop, who finished sixth in the Africa Cross Country Championships in Chlef Algeria this year, won the women’s 800m in 2:06:66 ahead of Betty Chepkorir who came second in 2:19:33 while Maureen Chepngeno was third in 2:20:52.
Dorcas Chepkorir of Sotik timed 04:08:14 to win the women’s 1500m ahead of Brenda Chepkorir who recorded 04:46:42 and Sylvia Chepkorir in 5:20:22.
The National Trials for Africa Senior Athletics Championships will be held from 21st to 23rd June 2018 in Nairobi to pick the team to represent the country during the Continental Contest programmed to take place from August 1st to 5th in Assaba, Nigeria.
