Cameroon eke slim victory over Starlets yet again

Africa Women Cup of Nation (Afcon) hosts Cameroon once again dimmed Harambee Starlets when they beat the Kenyans 2-1 on Sunday in Yaoundé as the countdown to the continental showpiece continued.

Michelle Akaba’s penalty in the 38th minute and an own-goal from custodian Samantha Akinyi in the 71st undid Starlets who had levelled the match through Christine Nafula in the 51st.

“We got clear scoring chances but failed to utilize them. But overall I’m happy with the team performance,” team manager Doreen Nabwire told Citizen Digital from Yaoundé.

Cameroon were awarded and converted a spot-kick when Elizabeth Ambogo was adjudged to have fouled their forward before Kenya fashioned an equaliser when Nafula volleyed home a Caroline Anyango cross.

The game started well for Starlets with Mary Kinuthia missing a chance in the 15th.

Starlets will travel to the coastal town of Limbe which where they will be based ahead of the start of the Awcon on November 19.

“We understand we are in a very tough Group B comprising of the champions Nigeria, Ghana and Mali. Our focus is to correct our mistakes from back to back losses to Cameroon,” the team manager added.

Head coach David Ouma made a few changes to the team that beat Egypt 1-0 leaving Corazon Acquino outside after she got a knock in that match and he is optimistic that she will have recovered by the start of the Afcon.
