Brewer Matano returns to familiar Tusker dug-out

The fiery Robert Matano has vowed to restore faded glory at Tusker FC, as he returns to the club he last coached back in 2012.

Arguably one of the most experienced local tacticians in KPL, Matano who parted ways with AFC Leopards just a month ago is set to be officially unveiled as Tusker’s new head coach on Tuesday morning.

This follows a complete overhaul of the 11-time KPL champions technical bench on Sunday, after uninspiring season so far, leaving them just a place above relegation zone from 11 matches.

Fired head coach Sam Timbe endured a difficult time at Ruaraka since taking over from fellow Ugandan George Nsimbe in the 2018 pre-season, claims of sabotage by his deputy Francis Baraza penetrating the brewers’ walls.

“True, I’m going back to Tusker. I go knowing my major task is to instil confidence in the team after that difficult start.

“My history in KPL is interesting, I’ve always picked teams from low ranks to title contention. I went to Leopards when they were facing relegation, I went to a struggling Ulinzi Stars and lifted them, same as World Hope and Bidco. I know how to fix things with time,” Matano told Citizen Digital.

On the alleged sabotage at the club, Matano said he expects nothing but clean working environment as he embarks on redigging the dry wells in Ruaraka.

“I don’t like sabotage, I don’t believe in it. If somebody is there plotting others’ downfall for whatever reason, that’s bad . I’m however going there to work, period.”

Matano was guarded, not willing to reveal his new contract details with Tusker, although he hinted it would be an initial short engagement.

On the current playing unit, Matano maintained he will work with the available players despite knowing the void left by 14 senior players who parted ways with Tusker at the end of 2017 season.

“My role is to get the best out of them. They must work hard for themselves, the club and the image of the company.

“I’m looking forward to have maximum cooperation from everyone, then I can pause to answer months later what new will I have introduced,” concluded ‘The Lion’.

Matano further revealed he has preferred candidates for the rest of the technical bench roles, but kept to himself waiting for the employers verdict.

Matano is expected to lead Tusker in their next match against Wazito on Wednesday.
