Bor, Nakitar clinch Imenti Road Race titles

After falling just short last year, Emmanuel Bor went a step better to win the South Imenti Road Race as Miriam Nakitar defended her crown in the corresponding women’s event on Sunday.

Bor who trains in Kapsabet, Nandi County clocked 48:32 for victory with Lonat Langlet and Alexander Mutiso claiming second and third places in 48.49 and 49:02 respectively.

“The terrain was challenging with the weather making it difficult but I thank God I did it. The local athletes are also good. I encourage them to train more because the temperatures here are similar to those in Nandi,” Bor said.

Nakitar stopped the timer in a personal best 52:37 followed by Beatrice Chepkemos who beat 58:15, and Judith Cherono who came third at 59:12.

“2018 I carried the trophy here but today’s race was not easy for there are many steep hills. I have also won the Lewa Marathon. I am now eying for the marathon in America Next year” Nakitar said.

Bor and Nakitar pocketed Sh100,000 in prize money with the runners up being awarded Sh50,000 and the silver winners getting Sh25,000.

Meru Sports Council Chairman who is also the former Athletics Kenya (AK) official Joseph Kinyua observed a need for training camp in the area.

“Our sports in the region are growing with new talents being realised. It is not expensive to start a training camp. I believe the county government can help in establishment of this noble institution,” Kinyua said.

He added that the climate and terrain in the region could not embarrass the new trainers.

Local organising committee chairman Kimathi Mutuerandu celebrated the event, calling on locals to embrace sports.

“Over 13 years since we started this race, runners from all over Grace the race. We aim at developing the event further for local runners to grow their talent” he summed.
