Blazers eye unprecedented Hockey title despite cash crunch

Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) women’s Premier League re-branded champions, Blazers, have put aside their cash crunch woes to focus on clinching unprecedented league title in weekend.

Head coach Jos Openda says despite financial crisis hitting hard his charges after telecommunication company- Telkom cancelled its partnership with the team, they are determined to toss to their record 20th consecutive cup success and 22nd in total in the weekend’s league finale.

The club has been without a sponsor ever since the telecommunication company cancelled its partnership at the end of July this year after sponsoring the team for 25 years.

Purring Openda has attributed the team success to players’ hard work, passion, discipline and dedication.

“Our players are dedicated, have passion and are hard working despite the financial problems we are facing. We want to win the title on a high note,” unmoved Openda underscored.

The unbeaten champions top the eight-team log on 32 points with their closest rivals USIU sitting second with 28 points.

Blazers will wrap up the 2019 season against second placed USIU and Sliders on Saturday and Sunday respectively at the City Park Grounds.

At the same time, seasoned Openda has appealed to the potential sponsors to come to the rescue of the cash-strapped team as they prepare for Africa Club Championship primed for next month in Egypt.

“We are planning for a fund raiser to support our team and especially try keeping our young players by helping them pay college fees. This team is very successful and I believe many companies would want to be part of us and that’s why we plead to them to come,” he appealed.

Last year, Blazers won tenth record extending continental title after defeating arch-rivals Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) 2-0 at Abuja National Stadium, Nigeria
