Beach Volleyball team aims for golden glory at Africa Games

The Beach Volleyball team head coach Patrick Owino is exuding confidence of bringing home a gold medal in the upcoming African Games to be held in Morocco on August 19-31.

The team that comprises the duo of Naomi Too and Gaudencia Makokha together with Owino left the country today for Morocco ahead of the continental event.

Having trained at the beach in Mombasa prior to their departure, Owino is confident the ladies are ready to conquer Africa with a gold medal, their main target.

“We have prepared adequately at the beach and the ladies are raring to go. Our target is to win gold but should we fall short of that then we should settle for silver,” Owino told Citizen Digital prior to their departure.

The pair are fresh from bagging a bronze medal at the inaugural Africa Beach Games held in Sal, Cape Verde in June and Owino is upbeat his charges will build on that performance.

“The African Beach Games gave us a good exposure and when we bagged bronze in Cape Verde, we analysed our mistakes and this time round, we are going to improve on the bronze medal,” said Owino.

In 2011 Games held in Maputo, Mozambique, Kenya’s Margaret Indilara and Dorcas Ndasaba bagged a bronze medal while Kenya missed on the podium in 2015 Games held in Brazzaville, Congo.

Owino further revealed that they are prepared for any challenge that awaits them in Rabat.

“This game is played outdoors and therefore we have no worries concerning the climatic changes that we might experience. The beauty of this game is that you can play at any given condition; whether it’s raining or when there are large waves,” added Owino.

Furthermore, Owino is adamant that the duo’s experience playing as a pair is another factor that may count in their medal-hunt.

“When you team up for sometimes you get to understand each other well and I think that experience will help us a lot,” Owino observed.
