Battle royal as Kisii County Games gets underway

The plan is in place, the venues selected, and is what is now left is for teams to slug it out for honours at the 2019 Term Two Kisii County School Games which kicks off today.

The games will be staged at Kenyenya and Nyamache sub-counties from Wednesday through Saturday.

The various sub-counties will battle it out for championships in football, netball, volleyball and racquet games for both under-20 and under-16 categories.

The panel spent the better part of Tuesday harmonizing the rules of the games and orienting the referees to their obligations.

KCSSA secretary general Geoffrey Nyantika is upbeat that everything will go on smoothly during the championships.

“I feel that we are ready for the championships. Today we have had referee clinics whose main purpose was to harmonize the rules on all games,” Nyantika intimated to Citizen Digital confident that the competition will be a thriller with the best talents on parade.

He went on: “Also, we have vetted the documents of all players to ensure that there are no non-students around and that they have all the required documents.”

Having bagged the boys’ and girls’ under-20 titles last year, Gesero Secondary School coach Evans Akang’a is confident his teams will repeat the feat this year.

“I’m confident we’ll defend both titles. I’m not anticipating any surprises given the way we have prepared ourselves for the tournament.

After we confirmed our qualification we avoided many friendly matches as a way of protecting our players from injuries,” he explained giving a hint as to the magnitude they are treating the competition.

The team left it late to make the cut for the county championships this year after they scored the winner against a stubborn Mogonga High School in the dying minutes of the game. With such realities defining the championships this year, he has warned his charges against complacency.

“We learned our lesson from the sub-county games since we had to score so late into the game to qualify for the county championships,” he revealed.

The team’s status rose from newbies to fully-fledged regional behemoths after staging consistent performances since their first participation in 2014.

“Also, I remember when we qualified for the first time to the counties everyone underrated us but we surprised them. As a result, we do not need to be warned to know what lies ahead,” he said with the confidence of a warrior ready for the battle.

At the same time, netball and volleyball champions Mogonga High School are positive they will defend their titles with much ease.

“There is no team that can beat us in both volleyball and netball. We have trained long enough since the players forfeited their December and April holidays.

“We have also played several friendly games against very tough teams. I believe these experiences will help us as a team,” he added.

The county winners will proceed to the regional games slated for Kisumu Day later this month.
