AK announces new venue for national cross country championships

The national Cross Country Championships that was set to be held in Kisii on February 13 has been moved to Nairobi.

In a statement, Athletics Kenya (AK) announced that the one-day event will now be held at the Ngong Race course on the same date.

The event will also double as National Trials to select Kenya’s team for the Africa Cross Country Championships that is scheduled for March 6-7 in Lome, Togo.

“Following lengthy deliberations between the AK Nyanza South, County Government of Kisii and AK head office, it has finally been resolved that the event is moved to Nairobi.

“We therefore advise you that the event will now be held on 13th February, 2021 at the Jockey Club, Ngong,” said Chief Administrative Officer Susan Kamau.

AK Nyanza South chairman Peter Angwenyi who confirmed the changes also said the region has been given the slot to host next year’s event.

“We had already booked the Kisii Golf Course to host the national event. However, despite the new changes I have been assured at the headquarters that we will be hosting the national championships in 2022,” Angwenyi told Citizen Digital.

At the same time, Angwenyi said the region will host regional cross country championships on Saturday at the Kisii Golf Course, the same venue that had been earmarked to host the national event.

“We are now in the final preparations for our regional championships even at the moment I am visiting some of the athletes in Nyamira County. All our three counties- Nyamira, Kisii and Migori will have teams at the championships,” he said.
