Acocoros Awuor ecstatic after Hashina, Mukangu earn Starlets call-ups

Acacoro Ladies head coach Paula Awuor is over the moon after her two players earned call-ups to the national women’s team Harambee Starlets, after impressing during the Chapa Dimba na Safaricom Nairobi region finals last weekend.

The duo, Diana Hashina and Sylvia Makungu have linked up with Starlets currently in camp, in preparations for the Turkish Women’s Cup next month having caught the eye of head coach David Ouma.

Despite her team not clinching the Nairobi region title following a 6-0 defeat in the hands of Beijing Raiders in a final match, Awuor feels more special for the two.

Hashina and Makungu earned their first call up in Starlets Under-17 team which took part in 2019 Cecafa women tournament, held in Uganda where they featured in the first team all through.

“I’m very happy for the girls joining the national team. It has always been my dream that one day I see the senior national team and that has come to pass. Despite the loss in our Chapa Dimba Nairobi the finals, they still impressed Ouma in a special way. I credit their growth to the Chapa Dimba tournament. I’m sure Ouma saw them playing in the first and second editions, and followed up on them till now,” an elated Awuor told.

Although there is stiff competition for the national team slots ahead of the Turkey tournament, Awour says her girls are up to the task hoping they will make the final squad.

Importantly, Awour says the duo have been exceptional in conduct noting it has been a key to their fast rise.

“They are the best in terms of discipline. If you give them instructions they will follow strictly, I think they know what they want in life.”

Hashina is a Form-Four student at Kariobangi North Girl’s Secondary School while Mukangu  a class lower, in the same school.

“Let them maintain humility, I always believe humble people achieve a lot. Let them not be over excited by the success so far. There is still a long way to go,” the coach advised.

The duo joins the Starlets camp together with Salome Drainer who emerged the Most Valuable Player (MVP), Chapa Dimba Nairobi region.

Other players who have benefited from the Chapa Dimba tournament into the national team include Falling Waters’ attacker Jane Njeri and her teammate Mariam Lumotmia, who emerged the Central region MVP.

Harambee Starlets reported to camp yesterday and will be in training for the rest of the week before leaving for the invitational tournament on Sunday.
