Woman arrested after stealing baby in church

Police have arrested a 22-year-old woman in connection with the theft of a 4-month-old baby that was allegedly stolen from a church in Kutus, Kirinyaga County.

The woman was found in possession of the baby at Mitheru Ward in Maara, Tharaka Nithi County.

Confirming the incident, Meru South OCPD Baraza Saiya said it was reported by officers from Kutus that a child went missing on Sunday, February 25 at Jesus Winners Church in Kutus with police tracing the suspect to Tharaka Nithi.

The baby’s mother, Fidelis Mugo, said she had left the baby with a friend as she went to attend to some issues outside the church compound.

On returning, Fidelis says, her friend said the child been picked by another church member who had requested to hold the 4-year-old.

A frantic search for the baby proved futile as the said church member who had taken the baby was nowhere to be found.

This comes as the latest baby stealing incident after a similar case was reported at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) a week ago, when a twin baby was stolen at the health facility. The baby was later found in Kawangware with the suspect being arrested.

Meanwhile, security agencies are on high alert over rising concern of a baby-trading syndicate in the country.
