Why parents from Precious Talents want the school to remain open

Parents from Precious Talents are a distraught lot after the government announced the closure of the learning institution where 8 children were killed.

Those whose children survived the tragedy are questioning whether the decision to move the children to different schools is realistic.

”Everybody has spoken about those who died but not about those who were left behind,” Gilbert Isiche, one of the parents said on Friday.

Mr. Isiche pleaded with the Education Ministry to let the school remain open saying his child has nowhere else to go that is close to home.

According to him, the nearest learning institution is located in Jamhuri, a one-hour walk from Dagoretti.

Sammy Victor Ndege, a teacher at the school, also urged government officials to reconsider their decision.

They were speaking during the memorial service for the Precious Talents on Friday.

ODM leader Raila Odinga announced that he and President Uhuru Kenyatta would jointly donate Ksh. 3million to victims of the tragedy.

Other leaders present include area MP John Kiarie, Nairobi Woman Rep Esther Passaris, nominated senator Millicent Omanga among others.

Education CS George Magoha announced the closure of Precious Talents School on Thursday as the crackdown continues on institutions with substandard infrastructure continues.

So far, four schools have been closed since the Precious Talents tragedy on Monday last week.

Education PS Belio Kipsang reiterated that schools that pose a danger to children will be shut down.

Speaking from Nakuru where he was inspecting schools on Friday, the PS maintained that arrangements will be made for children from the affected schools to be transferred elsewhere.

He added that parents are free to move their children to private establishments.

The proprietor of the Precious Talents Moses Wainaina has since been arrested and detained for 15 days as investigations continue.
