What is Cliff Ombeta ailing from? Judge wants lawyer to reveal medical documents

City lawyer Cliff Ombeta has been ordered to divulge what he is ailing from after he failed to appear for his clients in the Willie Kimani murder case.

Ombeta is representing four police officers and an informant who were charged with the murder of three people.

Justice Jessie Lessit said the court, victims and other parties in the case have been left in the dark even after Ombeta produced a doctor’s letter.

“I will adjourn the case to tomorrow morning –Friday and by this time either the prosecution may conduct and inquiry on the document, “ she said.

Earlier this week, Ombeta produced a letter from a doctor at Nairobi Hospital which stated that he is to be off duty this week.

“This is to certify that Cliff Ombeta Marube has been seen at the clinic today and has been given off duty 4 days from 07/07/2019 to 10/07/2019,” the letter from Dr. Sarah Mwaura reads.

The Prosecution however challenged the letter saying it does not show what the lawyer is ailing from and asked the court to invite the DCI to probe the letter and table a detailed report on the same.

State lawyer Nicholas Mutuku told the courts that the two weeks were set aside so as to hear and conclude the case.

“Since the letter shows the name of the doctor who attended to the lawyer, there is need for proper inquiry as to whether the facts are true,” said Mutuku.

Through his lawyer Doreen Kiha, Ombeta apologised and said he would appear in court on Monday to explain himself.

The accused police officers in the Willie Kimani case are Fredrick Leliman, Stephen Cheburet, Sylvia Wanjiku and Leonard Maina Mwangi.

The informant is Peter Kamau alias Brown.

Those who were killed are Willie Kimani, Josephat Mwenda and Joseph Muiruri.

They were allegedly kidnapped after leaving Mavoko Law Courts on June 23, 2016.

It was alleged that on that fateful day the three victims had appeared before the Mavoko court for a case in which Mwenda had accused Fredrick Leliman of assault.

Kimani, Mwenda and Muiruri disappeared after they left court.

Their bodies were retrieved one week later at Athi River in Oldonyo Sabuk stashed in bags.
