Water CS Chelugui says Gov’t committed to ensure water supply countrywide

Water Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui is leading a two-day workshop in Mombasa for board of directors of Water sector institutions.

Addressing the forum on Thursday, CS Chelugui said the government is committed to ensuring all Kenyans are connected to water supply, but there numerous challenges yet to be overcome.

He urged the newly-appointed parastatal heads, most of whom were picked from the political circle, to shun politicking and instead focus their energies on service delivery.

Some of new appointees include former Kajiado Governor David Ole Nkedianye, former Mwingi Central MP Joe Mutambu and former Kilifi South legislator Mustapha Salim Iddi among others.

This comes even as President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big Four Agenda aims at up-scaling the number of people accessing reliable and clean water to 9 million people by 2022.

While unveiling the strategic water storage program in May last year, President Kenyatta said that this would increase the number of Kenyans connected to safe piped water, noting that the demand for the commodity keeps rising due to population pressure.

The conference is set to end on Saturday, May 25.
