Waiguru withdraws 7-member team proposed for peace talks with Kirinyaga MCAs

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has withdrawn a seven-member team that had been proposed by the County Government to oversee a peace and reconciliation process between her and members of the Kirinyaga County Assembly.

In her press statement issued Saturday morning, Governor Waiguru said the list had been withdrawn “to give room for further consultations.”

“Yesterday 3 rd july 2020 a list of proposed names of Kirinyaga Peace and Reconciliation team was shared with the public. The list of names shared is a proposal from Kirinyaga County Executive. Having listened to the feedback shared on the list and in consideration of the same, we wish to withdraw the proposed name to give room for further consultations,” reads the statement.

The seven-member team was composed of J.S Mathenge (Kirinyaga elder and former Permanent Secretary), Archbishop Anthony Muheria, Paul Maringa (Principal Secretary, Transport)and Nancy Karigithu (PS Shipping and Maritime Affairs).

Others were Mary Kimonye (PS, State Department for Public Service), John Njiraini (former KRA Commissioner General) and Charles Ndegwa Mwai (Pastor from Mwea).

Among those we contacted, only Transport Principal Secretary Prof. Paul Maringa and Pastor Charles Ndegwa Mwai were in support while majority said they were not aware of the proposed list.

In her press release on Friday evening, Principal Secretary Department for Public Service Mary Kimonye said she supported the peace and reconciliation process but showed regret that as a serving public servant she cannot be part of the process because she left Kirinyaga County over 30 years ago.

Meanwhile, speaking on Saturday morning Kirinyaga MCAs led by Majority Leader James Kamau Murango, David Mathenge and Gudson Muchina asked Governor Waiguru to comply with recommendations made by the Senate in her impeachment report.

Senate recommended four County Government employees be investigated by EACC and DCI over misuse of copunty funds.
