Uhurus new Cabinet: What we know so far

Uhurus new Cabinet: What we know so far

The country’s attention could as soon as next week turn to Parliament, as it vets persons identified by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto for inclusion in the Jubilee administration’s second term cabine.

With multiple sources disclosing that the cabinet nominees lineup is likely to be unveiled next week, parliament’s leadership is scheduled to meet the president and his deputy on Monday to deliberate on the Legistlature’s calendar.

MPs were scheduled to break for the Christmas recess on Thursday (December 7), and resume sittings in February next year.

But a procedural motion could be moved after the Monday meeting, to push the adjournment date to 21st December, to facilitate vetting of cabinet nominees by the appointments committee chaired by National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi.

The House Plenary will have the final say on the cabinet nominees, before the president makes the appointments.

Lawmakers allied to the National Super Alliance (NASA) opposition coalition insist they will not participate in the vetting of cabinet nominees, terming the president illegitimate and do not recognise his choices.

Anxiety has gripped current cabinet secretaries, unsure whether they will retain their flags, amid intense lobbying for the limited slots in the executive.

All cabinet secretaries have since been directed to prepare handover notes in their respective ministries, to facilitate a smooth transition. The directive applies even to high flying CSs who are almost assured of re-appointment, but not necessarily in the dockets they currently hold.

With regional, ethnic and gender considerations to make, as well as rewarding political loyalty and factoring in the Kenyatta legacy, with 2022 succession politics at play, it’s a delicate balancing act for the presidency.

“The prerogative and mandate of appointing rests with the president, lobbying can’t make him change his mind, he already knows who can help him realize his dream and that is what is important,” said Senate Deputy Speaker Kithure Kindiki.

Sources also disclosed that the President and his Deputy will name 22 cabinet secretaries and increase the number of ministries to the maximum provided for in article 152 of the constitution.
