Uhuru bans movement in and out of Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos, Kiambu and Nakuru; reviews curfew hours

President Uhuru Kenyatta has banned movement into and out of Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos, Kiambu and Nakuru Counties following a spike in the number of COVID-19 infections in the five regions.

The cessation of movement into and out of the five counties takes effect on Saturday, March 27, 2021 until further notice.

Addressing the Nation on the COVID-19 situation in the country, President Kenyatta said Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos, Kiambu and Nakuru have been declared disease infected areas, noting that they account for 70 percent of the country’s total infections.

“Fully conscious that 70% of Kenya’s COVID-19 cases have been recorded in the counties of Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos, Kiambu and Nakuru, these counties are individually and collectively declared a disease infected area. There shall be a cessation of all movement by road, rail or air into and out of the disease infected area comprising of the counties of Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos, Kiambu and Nakuru effective midnight tonight until otherwise notified,” said the Head of State.

Bar operations and sale of alcohol in restaurants has also been suspended in the five counties until further notice.

The President also reviewed the curfew hours in the five counties, announcing that it shall begin from 8pm and end at 4am in Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos, Kiambu and Nakuru effective Saturday, March 27.

In the other 42 counties curfew hours shall remain as is currently in place; 10pm to 4am.

President Kenyatta directed the Ministry of Interior to review the current protocols for reissuance of curfew passes and exemptions.

“In light of the abuse of curfew passes and exemptions and its role in the steep increase in infections, The Ministry of Interior and Co-ordination of National Government jointly with the Ministry of Health are directed to immediately review the protocols for reissuance of curfew passes and exemptions. In that regard, in the intervening period all passes issued are hereby vacated,” he said.

All public gatherings and in-person meetings of whatever nature have also been suspended within the Counties of Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos, Kiambu and Nakuru until further notice.
