Deputy President William Ruto on Saturday maintained that he is best suited to take over from President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022 so that he can continue their development agenda. The DP spoke during the second day of his Meru tour in Igembe and Tigania areas as he sought to consolidate support in the populous county. “Mliniona nikifanya campaign ya Uhuru Kenyatta ama namna gani? Si nilifanya? Kwa maoni yenu, si rais anaenda kupumzika next year? Sasa kwa hii watu yote, nyinyi mnaona nani anaweza kuskuma hii baada ya Uhuru?” He posed. Leaders allied to DP Ruto also popularized the hustler narrative in Meru while dismissing the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) process and plans for constitutional changes as a matter that was of little priority to Kenyans. “Mnataka BBI ama wheelbarrow? Hii BBI ikija, mtaangusha ama mtapitisha?” Posed Mathira Member of Parliament Rigathi Gachagua. Meru Senator Mithika Linturi, on his part, said: Wacha kudanganywa eti BBI na watu wako na njaa na mashida, miraa yetu imefungwa…sasa nyinyi watu, priority ni BBI ama soko ya miraa?” The leaders campaigned on a need for change in the model of empowerment through focus at the grassroots. “Bottom-up economics, badala ya kuanzia juu…eti mahustler wangojee chini, sasa tutaanza hapa chini kwa mahustler, wale wako juu wako na uwezo watajipanga,” reiterated the DP. Ruto, who is on a three-day charm offensive in Meru, said he is more than ready to take on any competition in the race to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in the high stake 2022 General Elections.
