Tononoka Principal dies 5 days after school was closed over COVID-19

Tononoka Secondary Principal Mohammed Khamis has died following a short illness.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) sent a message of condolence saying:

“Following the death of Mr Mohammed Hamis, Principal Secondary, TSC condoles and stands with the family, students and school community of Tononoka Secondary School during this difficult time.”

Reports indicate that Mr. Khamis had been receiving treatment at a hospital in Mombasa before he passed on.

As at the time of publication of this article, plans were underway to have the deceased buried at the Kikowani cemetery.

His death comes five days after Tononoka Secondary School was closed alongside Star of the Sea following cases of COVID-19 at the two institutions.

On Monday, Mombasa County reported the highest daily number of coronavirus cases at 71 followed by Machakos 58 and Nairobi 50.

Other counties across the nation reported less than 30 cases recorded within the last 24 hours.

Across the sub-counties in Mombasa, the cases were distributed as follows: Kisauni (33), Mvita (20), Nyali (9), Likoni (5), Changamwe and Jomvu (2) cases each.

Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho recently warned that county officers may have to re-enforce stringent measures should the situation become worse.

“I urge you, the people of Mombasa, if you want us to do well on COVID-19 please wear your mask when you are close to people,” he told Mombasa residents during the Mashujaa Day celebrations.

Kenya’s total coronavirus caseload currently stands at 49,997 while fatalities are at 920.
