Three suspects detained over poisonous Githeri that killed 4 in Baringo

Three suspects accused of food poisoning that killed four people in Marigat, Baringo County were Monday detained for 14 days to allow police conclude investigations.

Appearing before Resident Magistrate Vienna Amboko, the three; Paul Kinyua Naituri, Evans Oyugi Ongechi and Nelson Letite, were accused of murder.

The court was told that the accused were the supervisors at the farm where the casual workers ate a meal of maize mixed with beans popularly known as ‘Githeri’ suspected to have been laced with poison.

The three are reported to have prepared the food which left a total of 19 people admitted at Kabarnet Hospital and Mediheal Hospital on Friday, December 13.

The magistrate directed that the suspects be detained at Marigat Police Station until December 30, 2019 when the case will be mentioned.

Meanwhile, samples of the food have been forwarded to the government chemist for further tests.
