3 prominent businessmen arrested over illegal sugar in Nyandarua

Police in Nyandarua County have seized over 5,000 bags and arrested three suspects found in possession of contraband sugar.

According to County Commissioner Boaz Cherutich, the three are prominent businessmen in Ol-Kalou and have been linked to the sale of the product.

“Further investigations are underway to verify if the sugar is poisonous and if it was shipped into the country illegally,” he said on Tuesday.

A multi-agency team comprising of security and Public Health officers, officials from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) have pitched tent in Nyandarua in an ongoing crackdown.

The team raided several supermarkets and wholesale outlets in Nyahururu and Ol-kalou town.

Another group is at the Engineer Trading Center in Kinangop where similar commodity is said to be hidden in some go-downs.

The County Commissioner was accompanied by Central Regional Police commander Felix Munyambu and Regional CID boss Danson Ndiru.
