Three people arrested burying womans body in Mombasa

Police in Mombasa have arrested three people who had buried a woman’s body at the Kongowea cemetery without the necessary documents and approvals.

Sunday mid morning Collins Okoth from Shanzu, Mombasa County and two other people are  said to have made their way to the Kongwea cemetery in Nyali, Mombasa County.

Inside the vehicle with no number plate was the body of a woman believed to be his late wife Mary Mwende which was to be buried under unclear circumstances.

The suspects who are in police custody are said to have dug a shallow grave and secretly buried the body of the woman, but not before area residents became aware that something amiss was happening

The residents alerted the police who arrested the suspects. As soon as the police left with the suspects, residents began exhuming the body that had been put in a sack and buried in a shallow grave.

Police say the husband claims that the woman has been ailing for a while and due to their financial status they could not organise a decent send off

The suspects are accused of conducting a burial without a permit. According to Nyali Sub-county Police Commander Daniel Masaba, investigations are underway and the suspects who are in police custody are expected to record statements.

The body was taken to Coast General Hospital mortuary.
