Suspended Kabianga SDA students recalled as atheists blast principal

Kabianga High School has recalled 17 students who had been suspended for skipping an exam for church.

Kericho County Education Director Zachary Mutwiri said the students who are Seventh Day Adventists were recalled after an amicable solution was reached with their parents.

He told the media that students who live around the school had already reported back to class while those coming from far were on their way.

Parents had threatened to move to court in what they termed as a contravention of the right to worship.

Meanwhile, the Atheists in Kenya Society had written a demand letter to the school principal Dr. Joash Oloo.

In the letter dated January 21, the society president Harrison Mumia also warned that he would move to court if the students were not recalled within 7 days.

“Religious freedoms must be protected. The cultural majority should be prevented from denying others freedom of worship and belief,” he said.

The 17 boys had been kicked out of school with their boxes and mattresses on Saturday for going to church instead of sitting for a C.A.T.

“We instructed them to sit for their exam between 5.30am and 7.30am on Sabbath day which had not really breached their doctrine or teachings,” he principal said.

He then told the parents that there are specific missionary schools for those who feel aggrieved by the school’s action.
