Spare no mheshimiwa, President Kenyatta orders police as he extends curfew

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday extended the 9pm to 4am curfew for a further 30 days as part of efforts to help in mitigating the spread of COVID-19.

President Kenyatta, in his address to the Nation at State House, urged law enforcement officers enforce the set guidelines strictly and without favoritism.

This comes following public uproar over the flagrant display of disregard to the COVID-19 guidelines by politicians and perceived powerful and influential persons in the country.

“Forthwith, the Inspector General shall ensure that his officers spare no mheshimiwa, no individual, regardless of social status or rank, who is either out after curfew without being an essential worker or who flaunts the health protocols that have been set out,” said President Kenyatta.

The President further warned administration and police officers that they will be held personally responsible for any breach of the rules within their areas.

“The national government administration officers and the National Police Service (NPS) will strictly enforce Ministry of Health (MoH) protocols on public gatherings and particularly funerals,” he added.

“Strict personal sanctions will ensue to all police and national administration officers in whose areas of jurisdiction there is a breach of the said guidelines.”

President Kenyatta also directed the health ministry to recall retired critical staff to aid the seemingly overwhelmed health workers in managing the pandemic.

Any government institutions designated by Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe as public health facilities shall immediately be availed, the Commander-in-Chief ordered.

“Ministry of Health will develop a protocol to temporarily retain retired ICU staff and anaesthetists to support the medical staff assigned to dealing with serious COVID-19 cases in the counties,” said the President.

“Any government institutions – including all sporting facilities, stadia, educational institutions and other facilities – upon designation by the Health CS as a public health facility shall be availed to MoH for isolation and quarantine purposes.”
