South Africans Disappointed Over Pistorius Verdict

Women’s rights groups campaigning on behalf of Reeva Steenkamp said they are unhappy over the sentence saying they expected a harsher sentence

Pistorius was sentenced to five years imprisonment after being found guilty of culpable homicide after the tragedy on February 14, 2013 when he shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Women groups campaigning on behalf of Reeva Steenkamp convened outside the North Gauteng High Court.

Among them was the African National Congress Women's League, the arm of the ruling party in South Africa.

The judge might have spoken about mercy while handing down her sentence inside the courtroom but for many outside the court of public opinion, it was a different story.

There were chaotic scenes both inside and outside the courtroom

The trial and sentencing have been historic as it was the first one ever to be televised in South Africa.
